CV - Juan Kasari

Juan Kasari | Real white panthers do croquet | MUU gallery | 19.10. - 25.11.2007

The background idea of Juan Kasari’s work is the fact that the values of society are changing into more conservative direction. The apparently progressive and liberal society falls more and more back on old values.

The photos that were the technical starting point have been processed into watercolour/mixed media work. They return to photographic form through colour printing. The work portrays white, aged men playing croquet together. All events and discussions at the court and at its sides are strictly based on rules and etiquette. Men and women have clear roles in the game. The work’s world of colour reflects the traditional watercolour paintings. The atmosphere in the pictures is very calm and balanced, also slightly dreamlike and distant.

Besides mixed media work the exhibition also presents a video and a sound installation. Juan Kasari’s previous video installations have mainly dealt with the communication between people and the man’s relationship with society using ironic and music video-like means. The video in this exhibition differs slightly from Kasari’s previous work. The slow video is filmed with a steady camera and there are only a few events in the video. The moving “video painting” is an important part of the exhibition and its atmosphere.

The sound installation consists of the sounds of croquet playing and random bits of discussion at the court and at its sides.
