STEREO IMAGES OF URBAN SPACES

31.10.-23.11.2008 | MUU gallery

Viewing boxes in the exhibition show images of urban spaces. The photos were inspired by the space robot Rover that explored the surroundings of the Gusev crater on Mars. Everyday environments documented from a robot's viewpoint introduce an element of the uncanny to familiar spaces.

Looking at the images, the viewer is in the exact spot relative to the scene as the cameras were. As the eyes zero in on the focal points of the cameras, the pictures taken from two different vantage points merge, creating a spatial experience. The event is simultaneously intimate and alienating, like watching the view through someone else's eyes.

During the exhibition, a small robot will be exploring the gallery, transmitting images into one of the viewing boxes in real time.
