Niko Skorpio: I Want My Revolution

I Want My Revolution is based on a performance held at public space. An anonymous person, his head wrapped in bandage, runs errands at a shopping mall. The performance aims to explore the conventions of quasi-public space as well as the reactions provoked in people and the performer himself.

I Want My Revolution imitates the form of music videos. The soundtrack is an electro punk track featuring a text-to-speech vocalist.

I Want My Revolution deals with the concepts of protest, revolt and revolution in post-capitalistic consumer society. Is change possible in a milieu that converts subversive symbols into commodity and devours all revolutionary energy for its own propulsion?

Niko Skorpio works primarily with sound, moving image and miscellaneous abandoned media. Experimentation and experientialism are crucial methods in his work process. His works often include performative and ritualistic elements and they may use lost and found material. Niko Skorpio has worked in underground electronic music and graphic design since the 1990’s. Julia Schicker: Pushing Glencore

By trying to push away the headquarters of Glencore, one of the world’s largest commodities trading companies, the artist tries to investigate in how a body and its actions can be a form of resistance and protest. The action is an attempt to move the building and its content to another place, where it won’t be handled as nicely as at the present site, where the company only has to pay very low taxes, where everyone just looks away and where it seems that human rights and other laws do not apply to them.

The artist wants to protest the behaviour of companies like these. She wants to tackle the frustration that comes up when fighting against these big and powerful constructs that seem to be able make everything happen with their wealth.

Julia Schicker started her studies in Fine Arts at the Zurich University of Arts in 2012. In 2014 went on an exchange semester to Vienna to study Performance Art with Carola Dertnig at Akademie der Bildenden Künste. She finished her BA in 2015. Since 2011, she has widely exhibited in Switzerland, and has managed to contribute to group-shows in St. Petersburg, Vienna, London and Hong Kong. www.juliaschicker.ch

Francois Knoetze: Cape Mongo – Cell

Cape Mongo – Cell follows the journey of an anthropomorphic creature through the city of Cape Town. The character is made from the city’s discarded cell phones. In the short film, the creature revisits the spaces of its imagined past – the locations associated with its material existence and the constitution of its social relations – as if walking against the consumer-driven currents of city. From the Afrikaans Taal Monument to the skyscrapers of the CBD, the character’s journey conjures up imagery that touches on some of the historical trajectories that have lead up to the endemic inequality and social alienation which characterises present day Cape Town.

Born in Cape Town in 1989, Francois Knoetze is a performance artist, sculptor and filmmaker. He holds a BA Fine Arts degree from Rhodes University and a MFA from Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT. Knoetze retraces the life cycles of discarded objects and explores junctures between material and social histories.

In 2015 Knoetze featured as one of Mail & Guardian’s ‘Top 200 Young South Africans’. His series Cape Mongo formed part of the Grahamstown National Arts Festival Main Programme in 2015 and the Global Graduate Programme at Design Indaba 2016, and he has participated in several international group exhibitions. www.francoisknoetze.com

Paweł Korbus: Few Simple Words in a Foreign Language

My love is one Arab and I am from a city in eastern Poland. We are fighting about our place in this world full of nationalistic tendency and divisions. I don’t know if it is a nice song or not but I have to sing that ‘Few Simple Words in a Foreign Language” with full of emotions and a bit of self-irony. You can be sure that the last kiss is honest and heartfelt.”

Paweł Korbus is a visual artist, a performer, an author of video works and installations, and an actor. He combines techniques of working with body, voice and various media from the field of visual arts. Interested in corporality and body under the influences and pressures of culture, experiences and emotions, mental sphere in a state of uncertainty, the suspension in a situation of conflicting needs and a subject to cultural disciplines. The artist crosses geographical and social distances. He enters relations and tests his behavior in situations of being a stranger. Korbus is a graduate of Art Education at the Institute of Fine Arts of the Faculty of Art at Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin, and also a scholarship holder of the Visegrad Artist Residency Program 2016.


Kim Dotty Hachmann & Steffi Simmen: Jump Jump

The girlish creatures lead through a well-known but alienated world. The protagonists perform next to the former secret service of the GdR, the Stasi headquarters and other urban and public spaces in the Eastern part of Berlin. Past, future or present? Space and time seems to be an undefined zone. Existence in itself does not guarantee a good life. The government currently defines surveillance as necessary and part of maintaining our freedoms but the truth is more complex.

In the movie Jump Jump the artist group FORM FUTURE deals with this current fiction of democracy and its growing abscesses. 25 years after the fall of the wall we need to question again the political and economic operations concerning the definition of freedom.

The song in the movie was popular in the GdR youth organisation “Pioniere” where children got infiltrated with political rhetoric. The mismatching of text and image reminds us as individuals to question how we want to establish a world of true freedom.

FORM FUTURE is a worldwide acting artist collective with the interest in the politics of everyday. Referring to literary visionaries like Orwell, Huxley and Twain, FORM FUTURE is trying to channel current and past realities in the form of imagined future scenarios and thus incite action.


Elizabeth Wurst: Live at the scene!

The artist poses in front of an apparently beautiful beach in her hometown Lima. She is wearing a mask that alludes to Latin American iconography and at the same time keeps her in disguise. The calm seascape gradually turns out to be an environmental disaster. The music video aesthetic is heightened by beat box sounds that the artist generates with her own voice. Wurst’s protest song caricatures an absurd and contradictory situation that is unfolding exactly at the moment when politicians are sitting around discussing at the UN Climate Change Conference Lima 2014.

Born 1985 in Lima, Peru, Elizabeth Wurst lives and works in Peru and Germany. She studied from 2006- 2011 at the Fine Arts University of Braunschweig (HBK). In 2012 she finished her post-graduate degree by Prof. Candice Breitz focusing in performance and video installation.

Wurst considers herself an activist and is invested in creating altered representations of the female body and delivers these directly to the passers-by on the public space.


Iwona Ogrodzka: About my youth

Iwona Ogrodzka, born 1991, Poland, is a visual artist interested in the pop culture, up-coming Apocalypse and Internet. She works at various mediums as painting, installation and video art. From 2015 she has been a curator of the MD_S gallery in Wrocław and a member of art collective Jaie Mała.

Timo Kokko’s work is influenced by classic traditional protest songs that never get old. Basic chords and vocals. The idea is in the story and how it is told combined with a lo-fi video.


Elena Mazzi: The financial singing

The singer interprets a graphic representing trends in the Western capitalist economy, giving back the social and emotional aspects of economical crisis that marked the course of the XX Century.

The work takes form from the book ‘How nature works’ by Danish physician Per Bak, where he defines strategies to analyse crisis and catastrophes in a positive way from a human and natural point of views, finding common affinities. The series will continue taking into account other new-born economies of the XX1 Century, analysing their shifts and critical periods of time.

Elena Mazzi was born in 1984 in Reggio Emilia (Italy). She received her BFA in 2007 in History of Art from Siena University, and her MFA in 2011 in Visual Art from IUAV, Venice University. She was selected for an exchange program at Royal Academy of Art of Stockholm. Her works have been displayed in many solo and collective exhibitions, among others: 16° Rome Quadriennal, GAM Turin, 14° Istanbul Biennale, 17° BJCEM Mediterranean Biennale. She attended different residency programs and workshops such as HIAP (FI), GuilmiArtProject (IT), and Via Farini (IT). She is one of the finalists at Celeste Prize, Fabbri prize, Meru prize and Termoli prize and the winner of Thalie Art Foundation grant 2017. In 2016-2017 she is tutor artist for Spinola Banna Fondation program in collaboration with GAM, Turin.


Elin Magnusson: Man-hate (manshat)

Elin Magnusson is a conceptual, video and performance artist and film director living in Stockholm.

“As a consequence of the performance Hate (http://www.elinmagnusson.com/hatet), a work based on men’s hate towards women, I filmed Man-hate. After working with hateful comments said by men, directed towards women, which together constitute the performance Hate, I needed to hate to, I wanted revenge and to hate back. I hate men because men hate me and in a repetitive incantation and revenge, I demand to be heard. I’m not asking for mercy, I do not explain, I don’t even scoff. In the guise of a collective misogyny I turn my back on you.”

Elin Magnusson is a conceptual video and performance artist and film director. Her work moves in the borderlands where culture clashes into nature and norms are questioned. Feminism, sexuality, body and space are recurring topics in her work.


Heidi Kilpeläinen: Implicated

Implicated comments on the social ills and inequality of our time. The video is a performative portrait of the malaise and wrath caused by frustration. The sounds of the video images with different paces form a rhythmic composition, a raging performance, which brings the frustration to the audience almost as a physical experience.

Heidi Kilpeläinen (HK119) lives and works in London, UK. She graduated from Central St Martins 2004 (M.A.) and has since explored crossovers between visual art and music merging their boundaries in ‘total works of art’ and creating combinations of video, installation art and performance. Her work is equally inspired by the contemporary world and its technological fascinations, as well as the ancient, mythological forms that run through collective memory. She produces works of aesthetic interest with a critical eye on our social environment, reflecting on our human condition within it.

Kilpeläinen has widely exhibited and performed in galleries and prestigious institutions, with a rich record of participations in shows and festivals, such as Camden Arts Centre (London 2016) Beaconsfield Gallery, London (2016) Performa 07 (New York 2007) Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki (2005) New Contemporaries 2004 (UK). She has also released 3 albums under the title HK119 (One Little Indian Records, 2005-2013) and has performed the material internationally in music venues, galleries and museums such as Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, ICA, Casa da Musica and Kiasma.


Jukka Silokunnas: 400ml of red

“Street art is a political act with a total freedom. It allows expressing emotions and movement. For me it has always been about movement. Mentally and physically. Reaching to something while tippy toeing to do a line as high as possible or running away from the cops. It is a bodily act. Where the paint is simply paint. But the action is like bullet through the greyness. Street artists draw the borders of their own worlds everywhere they go. Simple lines can pop the bubbles. They are always in home everywhere they go. And you don’t need a passport to entry.”

400ml of red examines the structures of graffiti culture purely through paint. The work explores its forms and power of expression focusing on movement and personal relationship to the space. 400ml of red was filmed with a single shot in 2016. Jukka Silokunnas is a visual artist and a street artist. Instead of a workroom, he works outside where there is life.


Sasha Huber & Petri Saarikko: Rongoa Remedies

There is a long tradition for various methods for healing – the individual, the collective, society or nature. Artists Sasha Huber and Petri Saarikko choreographed this performance or video action during a residency in Wellington, New Zealand, much inspired by the local Maori culture, but also by the imminent threat of nature – earthquake and tsunami – against a city, which is located on the very edge of a potential disaster. The participants of the collective performance are also co-authors of the work.

Sasha Huber from Switzerland with Haitian roots and Petri Saarikko from Finland are a visual artist duo living and working in Helsinki, Finland. They have been working and exhibiting both collaboratively and individually in museums, independent art spaces and residencies around the world since 2000. In 2011 they initiated an independent art space Kallio Kunsthalle based in Helsinki, directed by Saarikko with over 60 curated exhibitions from artists around the world. In 2011 they started to work on Remedies, a project exploring family-based aural knowledge of traditional folk remedies, which forms part of family identities around the world. They began with performances and videos for Huskurer Remedies (2010-11) in Sweden, and continued with further versions in New Zealand, Australia, Haiti, Germany and Russia. They produced an accompanying booklet for the show in Sweden (Huskurer Remedies, Swe/Eng, published by Labyrinth Press), and a second in New Zealand (En/Maori, published by Enjoy Public Art Gallery).

Kikka Rytkönen: Not your profit

A white pop-up person, relative to the Queen of Fucking Everything, appears to a white location. The watch has stopped at 8.15. She starts rapping. There’s angst, frustration, partly rage against the state of the world. Global capitalism based on pursuit of profit and constant growth does not consider the grave situation of climate change. On the contrary the race to last oil stashes escalates, for instance in the Arctic. Greed replaces common sense. Wars continue huge destruction, because war is a profitable industry. What’s the time?

Kikka Rytkönen grew through the 70´s as a hippie and political activist. Educated by the 70´s singing movement she is the founder, drummer and songwriter of post-punk girlband Edith Biafra. She continues as a singer and performer, and she has been actress in films like Räpsy and Dolly, and Mercy all the way. She has been working in visual arts since end of the 80´s. She has used household and recycled plastics as material for environmental art, light art and video art works. Music, rhythm, themes of womanhood, political background, and other contemporary themes have been subjects for her performances. Rytkönen has also been co-operating with Romanian and Bulgarian migrants, who make their living on the streets of Helsinki.

Vik Laschenov: One floor above sing until someone swims with dolphins

The characters work in the glass offices of business centres, in trendy cafés and co-working spaces. They are successful and well paid, but rather unhappy. Feeling stressed, they head for the forest where they try to exist, using familiar objects and modes of behaviour. Colleagues believe that the demons of downshifting can be blamed for everything. The demons of downshifting must be banished.

Vik Laschenov is the choreographer, performer, and screenwriter. He lives and works in Moscow. He has graduated the A. Rodchenko Moscow Art School, video art department and the Moscow New Cinema School, scriptwriting & editing departments. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Russia, Estonia, and Germany. He works with contemporary dance, performance for video and video art.


Arja Renell: Surumarssi / Acts of Sorrow (extracts I-III)

Ecological destruction of lakes and waterways go often unnoticed and are easily forgotten, as the long-term impacts are rarely dramatically visual at the surface. Many toxins build up slowly and react with each other over time causing the death of lakebeds while on the surface everything looks pristine and untouched. The conflict between what the mind knows and what the eye witnesses is too easily won over by the eye as our culture is so predominantly based on the visual.

Acts of Sorrow performance is part of a larger body of work related to the environmental and social impacts of the Talvivaara / Terrafame nickel mine in Finland. The performance was born out of anger, frustration and sadness, feelings, which are shared by those who have had to experience the impacts of the mine at close hand. The march is a solitary act of protest against those in power who are responsible for the continued ecological destruction caused by the mining operations. When the official democratic routes of protest and negotiation fail, and trust for those who are in the positions of power has been lost, the act of marching raises as an age-old empowering bodily reaction.

Arja Renell is based in Helsinki and works as an artist, architect and part-time teacher at the Aalto University. Her works evolve around environmental issues, especially underwater ecologies and fish. She works closely with research and local communities to explore specific issues, which can then take the form of a performance, dinner, temporary installation, event or a place specific project.
