Mari Miyamoto: IN REALITY

Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, 6 April 2017, 5–7pm.

This exhibition consists of installations, sculptures and a painting that all explore compositions with lines.

The installations combine abstract painterly gestures with physical hanging elements purposefully left on view. The emphasis on physicality transforms the intangible gestures into objects, trapping them into boring reality with all their limitations.

The cubical sculptures show different events depending on the angle of viewing. Colours disappear and reappear. Lines meet and merge or evade each other.

In the painting, the paint on the obverse side is barely visible, acquiring a tangible form as it pushes through the canvas in small droplets.

The works explore the relationship of the abstract and intangible to the concrete and visible.

Mari Miyamoto is a Finnish artist who lives and works currently in Tottori, Japan. She earned a Master’s degree from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2014, and has exhibited her work in solo and group shows in Finland and internationally. Miyamoto is interested in the basic elements of painting, such as colour, line and movement. In her works, she gives these elements a three-dimensional form using the expressive techniques of installation and sculpture.
