The opening ceremony will be on Thursday, 12 January 2017, from 5 to 7 pm. Welcome!

The element of time is important in drawing. Is it possible to produce an experience of simultaneity and/or succession through a two-dimensional picture? Can the flow of time be reversed? How is image affected by changes in the traced line?

Inka-Maaria Jurvanen creates pencil drawings on plywood. In some pieces she also uses acrylic, colour pencils and gold leaf.

Jurvanen is interested in worldviews. Their structure governs the internalisation and processing of experience. They are a force in society, in power structures, human relations, values, choices.

Jurvanen’s practice and her works are by nature comments. But the act of creation and the artwork both become evidence immediately, part of the structures of the artist’s own worldview. Distancing is possible only up to a point.

The themes of the works in this exhibition are lies, truth, untruths, and the possibilities for sincerity and self-deception inherent in them all.

Lie, Truth, Untrue, True
Desire, Wish
Pain, Certainty, Horror, Hesitation

These are all present at once. You cannot know or hear them simultaneously.
They have boundaries. The turn into one another. They contain each other.
They are transitory and eternal.

Truth is simple.
Truth is a statue. Truth has no shadow. It does not breathe.

Lies are conscious and unconscious. Lies are unwanted and unbearable.
Lies destroy memories.
A lie is a loss without event, a disappearance where nothing ceases to exist.
A lie is better than uncertainty.
What if a lie was never disclosed.

Desire takes hold of you, it uses truth and lies.

Wishes circle around existence.

Truth is here, it exists. But it is not necessarily true.
