Produced by Artists’ Association MUU

As part of the New Performance Festival, the Artists’  Association MUU invites artists to submit performance videos for the international PERFORMANCE VOYAGE 2 tour.

The first Performance Voyage event was organized in 2011 as part of the PERFORMANCE 2011 Festival produced by MUU. The festival was part of the official Turku Capital of Culture 2011 programme. In addition to Turku, the first video selection was presented in Helsinki, Hamburg, Riga, Tallinn and Tromssa.

The New Performance Festival will take place in Turku, Finland, on 4 and 5 May 2012. The festival wants to challenge the often narrow definition of performance art by looking at what is actually happening in the international arena of experimental performance. The festival showcases works that transcend the existing boundaries of performance art – often coming from a diverse range of backgrounds and forms while still remaining experimental and challenging. It is in this spirit that we invite
submissions of work to the festival. The New Performance Festival is produced by the Framil Network of Performing Arts in South-West Finland.

Please note that we are looking for video documentation of live performance work, not video art or performance made specifically for video. Please only submit edited footage – not unedited, raw material.

The videos must be MAXIMUM 10 minutes in duration. You should include titles and credits where appropriate. The titles should include information about where and when the original performance took place, along with the artist’s name, title of the performance, etc.

You may also wish to include a SHORT text explaining the context of the original performance (i.e. how long it was, whether it took place at a specific site, etc.). This should take up no more than one screen of text lasting about 20 or 30 seconds right after the titles. This is not a requirement, just a suggestion to maybe allow the audience to understand the documentation better.

There is such a range of digital formats today that this can be a bit complicated. Ideally we want to get the best quality video possible – particuarly if the video was shot in high definition format.

So there are a few options:

Firstly and most importantly, all videos should be in PAL format!

If the original video is in standard definition, a good option is to send it on mini DV tape. You can also export the video as an AVI or Quicktime standard definition DV file and send it on a DVD data disk.

You can also send the video as a standard DVD, but please try and ensure that it is encoded at a high quality. The DVD should only contain the single submitted video – it should not be a compilation DVD.

If the original video was shot in 16:9 (widescreen format), please export the video with a 16:9 frame ratio – do not convert the video to at 4:3 ’letterbox’ frame.

If the original video was shot in a High Definition format, it would be best if you could send a copy of the video exported into a HD file format and burned as a data file on a DVD data disk. Alternatively, you can send a link to a location where the file can be downloaded via FTP.

There are lots of different HD video codecs. I would recommend exporting your edited video using an MP4 or H.264 codec. Export the video as a 1080p or 720p frame size and use a relatively high data rate. A 10 minute video
with a high bit rate should fit onto a 4 GB DVD.

Before sending us your video, please try playing it in a VLC player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc). If you can play it in VLC, there is a good chance we will be able to play the video as well.
