Maimu Brushwood née Huolirinta
@Timo Tähkänen

27.6.-30.6.2019
MUU Gallery, Lönnrotinkatu 33, Helsinki, Finland

Poet Maimu Brushwood née Huolirinta is the alter ego of artist Timo Tähkänen. Her performative exhibition will take over MUU Gallery during the Helsinki Pride festival. The show will feature the release of Maimu’s collection of poems and she will also try out her wings as a visual artist. The themes of the show are identity, sexuality, love, growing pains, family, purple and moustache. Maimu has also invited visiting artists to take part in her takeover of the gallery.

Join us for the opening ceremony on Wednesday, 26 June, 17:00–19:00!
The opening performance will begin at 17:00, don’t miss it!

Maimu was born in the summer of 2016 when she jumped out of naïve painting and began reciting her poems. The first fusion of drag and painting took place at Tähkänen’s solo exhibition at tm•gallery in March 2017. Since then, drag has merged with Tähkänen’s painting in all kinds of configurations.

Exhibition programme:

Wednesday 26.6. from 17:00–17.30
Opening performance
Purple Buns
Maimu with Sara Kovamäki

Created by the trio during meetings held in the course of last spring, the performance began with infatuation on Instagram, a moustache dream, and a hollow feeling in Maimu’s tummy.
Languages: Finnish/English/Unknown.

Friday 28.6. from 17:30–19:00
Growing Pains – poetry recital
Maimu with Susi Nousiainen

Maimu has invited Susi Nousiainen to recite her poems in Maimu’s queer-oriented reading circle. Maimu herself serves as the hostess of the event and will read excerpts from her own book of poems. The public is also invited to read their own texts. The poetry recitals and all other texts will constitute a total work of art. It is also possible to participate just by listening. The evening’s equivocal theme is ‘growing pains’. The purpose of the reading circle is to offer a safe space for reciting texts.
Language: Finnish.

Sunday 30.6. from 16:00–17:30
Picnic and story time for adults (R18)
Maimu with Anita Bang (Vili von Nissinen)

Join Anita and Maimu for a laid-back story time, to enjoy refreshments, get your ears burning and your feet resting on the day following Helsinki Pride Parade. Anita and Maimu are polar opposites, like yin and yang. You can also bring your own picnic.
Language: Finnish.

The exhibition is part of the Helsinki Pride 2019 programme.

AREA MAIMU will also include a discussion on Thursday 27.6. at 18:00. Kikka Rytkönen will have a conversation with Timo Tähkänen on the theme ‘Talk about Performance’.

This exhibition is generously supported by the Paulo Foundation.
