ENLIGHTENMENT is a group exhibition featuring artists Anne Roininen, Pia Männikkö and Heidi Saramäki. It is based on a master class for professional artists that was held at Liminka Art School in June 2018. The purpose of the master class was to aid and encourage artists who are interested in light as a medium to experiment with cross-disciplinary projects, and to make light art, a relatively unknown discipline, better known to the public.

Opening on Thursday 3 of January 2019 from 3-10pm. Welcome!

The exhibition in MUU Cable is part of the programme of the LUX Helsinki festival. https://www.luxhelsinki.fi

The master class was led and the exhibition was curated by media artist Jukka Hautamäki. Other lecturers were Mia Kivinen, light artist, and Leevi Lehtinen, regional artist specialising in light art who also coordinated the project. Enlightenment is a co-production by Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Artists’ Association MUU, Northern Photographic Centre, Oulu Artist Association, Union of Finnish Art Associations, and Liminka Art School.

The works in the show are based on the participating artists’ previous output in which they have used the potential of light as a medium. A key concept in the curating of the show was ‘extended light art’. Many of the featured artists and works completed during the master class have close links to media art. Combining several media into one piece, the works challenge viewers to consider light art from new perspectives.

Anne Roininen often creates her works in a site-specific and interactive process. Her media include performance, photography, various forms of collectiveness, as well as light and installation. She is best known for light works in which the windows on the façade of an apartment block are lit with different colours.

Pia Männikkö uses a range of media and techniques in her work, from everyday object, textiles and clay to photography and video. Her work is often inspired by the movements and dimensions of the human body. Key aspects of her art are the recording of the passage of time and the growth and change of the works themselves.

Heidi Saramäki is a visual artist based in Tampere whose main media are moving Image and photography. The thematic core of her work involves concerns about power, humanity and our relationship with nature.
