A restless perceptual curiosity pervades Michal Czinege’s art. In closely observing the world around us, he detects and zeroes in on peripheral phenomena, the fleeting play of light and shadow, and other modes of representing space. His gaze, moreover, is sweeping. Not only does it encompass the physical environment and simulacra, but the imagination, as well as the influence of memory, also play a role. Elements distilled from these various sources then make their way onto the surface of his chosen substrates. Here, the artist builds intricately complex visual structures that often appear chaotic, at least initially. The works tend to hover between abstraction and representation, and because of the way Czinege layers, juxtaposes and/or distorts the components, they also embody tension and contradiction. Moving background elements to the foreground, obliterating the defining features of a likeness and converging disparate periods of time are all hallmarks of his work. In some cases, the precise application of colour enables him to produce works that defy reality.

Opening on Thursday 8th of November, from 5pm – 7pm. Welcome!

Though Czinege studied painting, he does not limit himself to the discipline’s all too familiar conventions. In recent years his work has, in fact, broken out of painting’s traditionally rectilinear frame to penetrate space. Now, and in addition to painting, Czinege creates room occupying installations.

For Muu, the artist will be producing two site specific installations that exploit the workings of camouflage to create unique perceptual phenomena. Titled 15 Years in Artificial Light, which concerns itself with the appearance of objects, and Behind the Moon (a reiteration of the exhibition’s title), for which the artist will move build his Nurmes’ studio to Muu’s premises to explore the interrelationship of light and shadow, the necessarily ephemeral characteristics of these phenomena will be explored. These art works must be actuated by the viewer’s presence to be experienced, otherwise they do not exist.

Michal Czinege (1980 Bratislava, Slovakia) has lived and worked in Finland since 2015. In 2011, he obtained a doctorate degree from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and then was employed as an assistant professor in the Academy’s Department of Painting until his move to Finland. His art has been exhibited in Slovakia, Finland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, France and Germany. michalczinege.com
