TIMO TAKALA – BIRDHOUSE

14.9.-21.10.2018
MUU Studio
Lönnrotinkatu 33, Helsinki
Open: Tues-Fri 12-17, Sat-Sun 12-16

Picture: Timo Takala

In the beginning of the project, I collected scrap iron dumped in a forest. I then carbonised the scraps into a new steel bar. I hammered it into a sawblade and sawed a log into boards. Finally, I put together a birdhouse from the boards and hang it up in the forest whence the wood originally came. The video documentation also features a German Shepherd named Luca, who helps all he can.

Opening 13.9.2018 at MUU Studio from 17-19! Welcome!

For most Finns, the forest is a familiar, calming and maybe even sacred place. For some, however, it is a place where you can dump your old fridge and car tyres; out of sight, out of mind. But when I heard stories about Chinese tourists who mistake a Finnish summer cottage area for a wilderness, I realised that the notion that Finns have a special relationship with the forest is not merely a cliché.

Along with this project, my attention has been drawn to news about collapsing bird populations. They have been falling since the early 1980s, in the case of some species by as much as 90 percent.
