RE-VOYAGE @ CONTENEDORES FESTIVAL

The Performance Voyage series, international collection of video performances produced annually by Finnish Artists’ Association MUU, got a sequel after Performance Voyage 7 collection; Re-Voyage. Curator Basak Senova selected 10 works from Performance Voyage 1 – 6. Re-Voyage was premiered in Kunsthalle Exnergasse – WUK at the end of May, and second screening is at  Contenedores Festival in Sevilla, Spain at 7th and 9th of June.

The selection Re-Voyage aims to explore the intersection points between performance and moving image. The performative aspects of each work create situations and potentials for subjective forms of knowledge. The selection includes works from Heidi Kilpelainen (PV1), Scott Sandwich (PV2), Filippo Berta (PV3), Essi Kausalainen (PV3), Elina Brotherus (PV4), Marja Helander (PV4), Verica Kovaceska (PV4), Marika Orenius (PV4), Sasha Huber (PV5), and Magda Gebhardt (PV6).

In 2018 Contenedores Festival organizes its 18 edition – 18 years working in the field of Performance Art: its theory, the praxis and the education in Sevilla, Spain. Edition 18 is about celebration and in 3 days 42 artists from around the world are going to meet in Sevilla to celebrate the “coming of age” of the festival. Edition 18 is curated by Ruben Barroso (Contenedores) and Nieves Correa (Acción!MAD), and it’s organized in co-production with Acción!MAD – International Performance Art Meetings. Acción!MAD is an independent platform for projects that work to support the creation, publicizing dissemination and promotion of Performance and Action Art.

Curator Basak Senova is a reseacher at Kunsthalle Exnergasse, a writer and a designer. Senova was the curator of the Pavilion of Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale, the curator of the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2014 and much more. She has recently received Associate Professorship by the Higher Education Council of Turkey.

The themes of previous Performance Voyage collections have been among others Body and Sound (PV3), Domestic (PV5) and Future – Tomorrow (PV6). The Performance Voyage tours organized in 2011-16 have covered more than 76 events in 37 countries. Performance Voyage has traveled to Europe, Asia, Russia, Africa, and North and South America. There has been a total of 89 artists and / or artist groups.

Contenedores- festival, in collaboration with Acción!MAD will present also Performance Voyage 7, curated by Heidi Kilpeläinen, Jaakko Nousiainen and Timo Soppela. Performance Voyage 7 with the theme Protest Song Competition! includes works from 18 international artists / groups who explore the political situation and frustrations, the contemporary or future form of the protest song. The artists featured in the Performance Voyage 7 collection are Kuesti Fraun, Kim Dotty Hachmann & Steffi Simmen, Sasha Huber & Petri Saarikko, Heidi Kilpeläinen, Francois Knoetze, Timo Kokko, Paweł Korbus, Vik Laschenov, Elin Magnusson, Elena Mazzi, Iwona Ogrodzka, Ignacio Pérez Pérez, Arja Renell, Kikka Rytkönen, Julia Schicker, Jukka Silokunnas, Niko Skorpio and Elizabeth Wurst. Performance Voyage 7 has been screened 19 times during 2017-2018 in 14 different countries.

The production of Performance Voyage 7 has been supported by the City of Helsinki, The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture AVEK, the Finnish Institute in London and the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute FINNO.
