The founding of Artists’ Association MUU in 1987 was in many ways a political move. At the time, contemporary art practitioners were concerned over the representation, within the art system, of marginal or new genres such as video, sound and performance art. The name of the association was borrowed from grant application forms, where projects that did not fit the list of categories provided in the form were all grouped under the heading Muu, Finnish for “other”.

Today MUU has nearly 650 artist members, and it is the second largest organisation representing professional visual artists in Finland. The enduring ideas underlying all activities at MUU are to spotlight new areas of art and to question what contemporary art is now or will be in the future.

Join us for the anniversary of MUU art! Come to celebrate, to see and be seen!

*The international Performance Voyage 7 compilation of video performances under the title Protest Song Competition! has been on world tour for one year. This will be the 18th screening in the tour, and the first one to take place in Helsinki. We wish to thank the supporters of the project: City of Helsinki, Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture AVEK, Finnish Institute in London, and Finnish–Norwegian Cultural Institute FINNO.
