The Hamburg Artist House FRISE, together with the Artists’ Association MUU, organised an open call for artists at the end of 2017. On the basis of the open call, artists Helinä Hukkataival and Petra Vehviläinen were chosen for the Frise Residency in March 2018.

MUU and Frise have cooperated since 2009. FRISE – The Künstlerhaus is an artist-run Art Center, which also houses the gallery, the AiR Program Residency and artist studios. FRISE was founded in 1977 and currently has over 50 artists working there. FRISE artists represent several fields of art such as painting, installation, sculpting, drawing, video, photography, performance, sound art, community art and conceptual art. The residency provides for Finnish artists excellent resources and working conditions.

At the end of the residency period, a public event will take place in the Galleria Frise from 29 to 31 March 2018. In the Sticks and Tracks exhibition, the artists Helinä Hukkataival and Petra Vehviläinen will present installations, drawings, paintings and performances.

The event will also feature MUU’s international video performance collection Performance Voyage 7, and will more widely introduce MUU’s activities and present the forthcoming contemporary art festival Art Fair Suomi 2019, which will take place at the Cable Factory in Helsinki on 23-26 May 2019. The main organisers of the AFS Festival are MUU and the Association of Photographic Artists (Finland). The organisers welcome Hamburg-based artist-run galleries and organisations to attend the festival.

FRISE is supported by the Ministry of Culture Hamburg and the Bezirksamt Altona. The Performance Voyage 7 project is supported by the City of Helsinki, the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture AVEK, the Finnish Institute in London and the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute FINNO.
