NOT festival in California  to screen Performance Voyage 7 collection

The NOT Festival, 24 February – 3 March 2018, is created by Luis Lara Malvacías and 3rd class citizen collective and presented in collaboration with the UC Riverside. Luis Mara Malvacías founded 3rd class citizen collective in 2003. Formed initially with a focus on dance, visual arts and New Media, the collective was comprised of artists from a wide range of the growing Latino populations living and working in New York. Its collective nature also encouraged the interaction of artists, musicians, designers and choreographers from different cultural backgrounds. The project is constantly evolving and changing. The Not Festival is a result of this venture.

The Not Festival is a multidisciplinary event pursuing a deeper investigation of the cultural, aesthetic and social complexities embedded in the word ”Alterity”, which in itself defies a simple definition: it equally defines both difference and otherness. The idea was to create an 8-day event, to offer a dynamic platform and to have an outreach to the larger community of Riverside and the nearby cities.

Performance Voyage is an annual collection of video performances that has been published in different themes since 2011 by the Artists’ Association MUU. The PV7 collection with the theme Protest Song Competition! has been screened around the globe 12 times in 2017-2018, in an effort to foster the ongoing conversations of political resistance within contemporary art.

The videos featured in Performance Voyage 7 explore ao. borders between right and wrong, human and inhuman, frustration and the individual’s possibilities to promote social change. Protest songs typically reflect great social changes and the works of PV7 also present alternatives to existing circumstances. The collection contains works by 18 artists or groups from around the world.

The artists featured in the Performance Voyage 7 collection are Kuesti Fraun, Kim Dotty Hachmann & Steffi Simmen, Sasha Huber & Petri Saarikko, Heidi Kilpeläinen, Francois Knoetze, Timo Kokko, Paweł Korbus, Vik Laschenov, Elin Magnusson, Elena Mazzi, Iwona Ogrodzka, Ignacio Pérez Pérez, Arja Renell, Kikka Rytkönen, Julia Schicker, Jukka Silokunnas, Niko Skorpio and Elizabeth Wurst.

The production of Performance Voyage 7 has been generously supported by City of Helsinki, the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture AVEK, the Finnish Institute in London and the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute FINNO.
