Tuomo Kangasmaa, Stage

Hidden Details is an installation that combines photographs with texts. Its theme is the environment in a very broad sense of the word. On the experiential level, the environment is personal, yet in the collective context it becomes political. The environment with all its various meanings is the subject of an increasingly heated political debate today. Personal experiences of the environment threaten to disappear in a maelstrom of plans, arguments, trends and ideologies. The starting point of the photographs in the show is personal experience of the immediate environment, and the possibility of seeing the ordinary and the familiar in a new way, as something strange

Opening of the exhibition in MUU Cable is 1.3.2018 at 5-7pm! Welcome!

Kangasmaa includes a certain element of randomness and sensuality in his process, which has a marked effect on the atmosphere in his pictures. In his pictures, he seeks to create an aesthetic world that is both recognisable and unrecognisable at the same time. Most of the photographs are digital images shot without a glass lens.

There are two types of captions: the artist’s own descriptions of the pictures and computer-generated interpretations. The computer’s statistical interpretations and the personal descriptions create a dialogue that provides a background to the pictures and establish verbal connections between personal observation and universal progress.

Tuomo Kangasmaa typically combines performance, documentary and traditional film in his work. Using a range of formats, he presents digital and analog moving images, photographs, texts, sounds, voices and sculptures alone or in combination. He is interested in the geographic north without wanting to give a strict definition of the term. One of the key elements in his creative process is micro-history, wherein insignificant places give rise to wide-reaching questions.

The exhibition is supported by the North Ostrobothnian Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
