Yassine Khaled & Elina Oikari 2016-2018

Inspired by John Lennon’s famous song Imagine (1971), this exhibition explores many of the same themes involving dreams, the imagination and freedom of movement. The show features the premieres of two video works: Yassine Khaled’s Monitor Man (vol. 2) and Elina Oikari’s Hotel President. The two works build up into a dialogical whole. Monitor Man is compiled from footage of performances given by Khaled in 2016 and 2017 in Helsinki, Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, Venice and Copenhagen. Hotel President is an exploration of the mindscape and lived reality of asylum seekers in Berlin.

Opening of the exhibition is 1.3.2018 at 5-7pm! Welcome!

Monitor Man is a performance that gives the viewer an opportunity to meet a randomly chosen person who is physically far away but is brought near by modern technology. In the performance, Khaled walks in the gallery wearing a helmet through which he is in real-time contact with persons outside of Europe. The work introduces a captivating image of virtual communication into the public space while also serving as a mirror to European society by showcasing the reactions of passers-by and the discussions that emerge during the encounters. The documentation of performances provide a fascinating overview of six cities with different identities – and readiness to accept Monitor Man.

Elina Oikari’s Hotel President was shot in Berlin in 2016 and 2017 in front of the centrally located Best Western President Hotel, which is currently used to accommodate asylum seekers. The soundtrack consists of interviews with asylum seekers, which are contrasted with drawings of smiling presidents and prime ministers who seem to be giving the refugees a warm welcome to the “West”.

The exhibition is generously supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
