Media variations exhibition of seven artists in lothringer13/halle, München Screening of videos by MUU artists on Saturday 6 July at 9pm curated by Oliver Whitehead MUU production supported by The Arts Council of Finland, FRAME - Finnish Fund for Art Exchange, AVEK - Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture ![]() Media Variations Contemporary art is constantly increasing its visibility as it embraces the "digital revolution" and as a result reflects the global flow of cultures. With access to media from almost any part of the world the emerging digital technologies have also created new audiences for local and alternative art media. With the multi-directional character of digital communications the global community is opening up to more diverse influences and as a consequence, the merging of traditional identities and cultural values is creating a greater global consciousness. We are also witness to artists taking the opportunity to exhibit, interact and perform with works which are becoming inextricably linked to this global media. Our understanding of identities are themselves reflections of the historic flow of stories and information both within and beyond geographic boundaries. Parallel to this are also the unseen boundaries between individuals and within ourselves that are being affected by this access to global information. As media artists explore and roam these boundaries becoming increasingly involved with the environment and people, their works and source material become ever more intertwined within media. Media Variations comprises of seven visually different artists from Muu, who are using audiovisual technologies that look at how it presents influences and perceptions of ourselves. The ranges of media works in the exhibition include drawings, photographs, video installations and Internet art. There is the navigational drawing series, Projection, by Stig Baumgartner and the fathomless membrane works as video, Ultima Thule, and paintings, Chromium Oxide Green, by Mikko Maasalo. Rita Leppiniemis cooperative Internet site transforms submitted phobias into animated images. Pia Euros combination of inner and outer structures create an ambiguous sensation as a personal reference to the passing of time of a very intense moment. Hanna Maria Anttilas video installations, Milk and Surface present the difficulty of defining oneself and confronting another. Two photograph installation works by Sari Tervaniemi, A Shade of Red 13 stills and Lena Séraphin, I Can´t Remember Why I´m Here, use parody to explore the boundaries between fact and fiction using narrative with a cinematic appearance to present fragments of uncertain and perhaps threatening situations. These media works I feel reflect tendencies in art media and reveal something about how these artists are traversing boundaries searching for different modes of media expression. Oliver Whitehead |
