PRESS RELEASE
From April 16th until 18th, 2004, the Artists' Association MUU is bringing together local and international soundartists, musicians and media theorists over three days to facilitate the exchange and development of ideas, skills and practices in contemporary Sound Art. The media art event DIGITAL is arranged already for the third time. The speakers during Digital 3 seminar in Q-teatteri are: SOPHEA LERNER (Australia), MOMUS (UK), CHARLIE MORROW (USA), PER PLATOU (Norway), ALEKSEY PLUSNIN/SKIF-8 Festival (Russia), ANDREI SMIRNOV (Russia), HANS SYDOW (Denmark).
Parallel to the seminar, MUU gallery presents an exhibition by the soundartist and musician CHARLIE MORROW. Charlie Morrow is a New York based sound artist whose work spans from the 1950s to the present. He is best known for large scale networked performances, like International Solstice celebrations and city sized events with machines and 1000s of performers like Citywave Copenhagen and Tootn Blink, Chicago. 3D sound is his current passion. (Charlie Morrow: Horizontal Vertical Band April 10-25,.2004, MUU galleria)
MOMUS and THE HELSINKI COMPUTER ORCHESTRA are performing at the club-event, Saturday evening, April 17, from 8 pm. Momus is a Scottish songwriter. For more than twenty years hes been releasing playful and transgressive albums on labels in Britain, America and Japan, building up a personal world dominated by values like diversity, orientalism, and a respect for otherness. The Helsinki Computer Orchestra is comprised of a rather heterogenous group of experimental electronic musicians, free improvisers, and noise musicians. The instruments vary from clumpsy 80s game consoles to the aerodynamically designed powerbooks of the new millennium.
As an ending of the Sound Art event, Presentation of the 3D MorrowSound Cube Workshop at the Kitchen, New York, 2004, can be experienced at the MUU gallery, with works by: OLIVIA BLOCK, SHELLEY HIRSCH, ILLUSTRIOUS COMPANY: MARTYN WARE & VINCENT CLARK, MIYA MASAOKA, STEVE McCAFFREY, CHARLIE MORROW, PHILL NIBLOCK, MICHAEL J. SCHUMACHER, SCANNER, STEPHEN VITIELLO, PAMELA Z.
DIGITAL 3 at MUU attempts to renew the way in which we perceive the depths of sonic, visual and spatial Sound Art.
Media and Sound Artists often have the same software at their disposal as musicians, but their approaches are however different. Synergies, which stimulate musicans and media artists, are triggered through the existing soft and hardware, but which possibilities and solutions are there to use technology for artistic results. How do artists manage, despite or because of this technology, to mark new aesthetic ground. Is there further development of software and new dimensions for new play possibilities, expression and presentation forms.
Each lecturer during the seminar will have a different approach towards contemporary Sound Art.
