history
Ladonia was founded by the Swedish artist and historian Lars Vilks. Ladonia is claiming a piece of land at a peninsula in Southern Sweden as its territority. Everything started with a large scale land art project, but developed into a micronation. Today Ladonia is the fastest growing micronation, it attracts people from all over the world to become citizens. It enjoys very active cultural live and political debate. Ladonia has a parliament, several political parties, a newspaper, and many other activities. Recently Ladonia was forced into a difficult situation when it received applications for asylum from around 3,000 Pakistani citizens.
comment
Ladonia is a very good example, how micronations can provide a playground for experimenting with democracy and other forms of state organization and how they can re-activiate people to engage in political debate, which otherwise would escape them. Ladonia seems so succesful, as it consists of both a small piece of territory - the holy land - including its "national" monuments on one side and a vast growing virtual nation on the other side.
